NEWS: 1st Sextuple Double Grand Canyon Crossings Attempt – 6xR2R2R = R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R

UPDATE (Oct 15, 2022): I failed.

On Wed, Oct 12, 2022, I will start for a self-supported sextuple (6x) double Grand Canyon crossing FKT attempt: 6xR2R2R = R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R.

Brandon Worthington currently holds the FKT for 5 double crossing in 3d 21h 51m 9s.

[pullquote]The harder you keep trying, the more likely you are to fail.[/pullquote]

This time I will start at the north rim, leisurely head over to the south rim on the north and south Kaibab trails, and head back. Then repeat until I’m tired. My car will serve as a basecamp. I will not have any support. If my math is correct, 6 double crossings will add up to 252 miles (406km) and 66,000ft (20’117m) of elevation pain. So it’s practically a piece of cake compared to Tor des Glaciers (280mi/450km, 130,000ft/32’000m of EG).

How hard will this be? Well, it’s all relative.

As usual, I spent countless hours deep in spreadsheets to analyze selected previous efforts and to make “realistic” predictions. But as we all know, my predictions have never really worked out.

SS = self-supported, S = supported.

Dot watching

Dot watching will likely be excessively boring, but also confusing because you won’t quite be able to tell what crossing I’m on. If you still want to follow, you can do so in the embedded map below or at https://maps.findmespot.com/s/M872.

NEWS: Unsupported 124mi Goat Rocks Clover FKT Attempt

On Fri, Sep 9, 2022, I will make an unsupported and solo attempt of the “maxi” 124mi Goat Rocks Clover route. There’s currently a small fire in the Goat Rocks area, but all trails I have to be on are open (as of Thu, Sep 8, 2022).

The Goat Rocks Clover

Nestled between snow-capped Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams, the Goat Rocks wilderness is known for its stunning alpine scenery. One of the best sections of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail #2000 (PCT) leads through the middle of the Goat Rocks wilderness. Old Snowy (7,930ft) and Gilbert Peak (8,201ft) are the most notable peaks in the area.

The Goat Rocks Clover route combines quite possibly everything you will want to see in the Goat Rocks wilderness into one big (mini or maxi) adventure. More info here.

Dot watching

Tracking will be available in the embedded map below or at https://maps.findmespot.com/s/QZHW. I plan to start from the Scatter Creek trailhead in the early morning hours of Fri, Sep 9, 2022.
